Board of Education & Superintendent Development
To effectively meet the challenges of public education, school boards and superintendents must function together as a leadership team. Each leadership team should annually assess its development needs both as a governing body and as individuals. The EGL team can provide in-depth, whole board training designed to support your board/superintendent team.
This training includes effective practices in all aspects of school board governance and oversight of administration. The complex challenges of education require board members and administrators to address problems from multiple perspectives and across various disciplines. Our team partners with the school district’s board/superintendent team to identify and address your district’s governance and leadership training needs. Through this development process a high functioning governance and leadership team will emerge enabling your school district to obtain success for every student.
School board members will benefit greatly from our training in the following areas:
School board and board member roles and responsibilities
School laws and regulations
Effective school governance practices
Board planning including the development of vision, long-range and annual renewal of plans
Evaluation of progress toward goals and planned outcomes
General procedures including ethics, parliamentary procedure, duties of officers, agenda setting, conduct of meetings, Sunshine Law requirements, and participatory decision-making

Governance/CSIP/Strategic Planning for MSIP 6
If you want to end with student success, you must begin with a strategic plan for governing the school district. We believe that only the Board of Education, as the elected governing body of the district, can establish such a plan and set the direction for the school district.
The latest iteration of the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP 6) is focused on continuous improvement for all schools, the preparation of each student for life beyond high school and promoting practices that lead to healthy school systems. MSIP 6 will take a closer look at what districts are doing to implement effective practices for school board leadership and continuous improvement, the culture and climate of the school district and success-ready students.
Our team has developed a process for making a Governance/CSIP/Strategic plan that aligns to MSIP 6 and all governing documents in the district, including the Superintendent’s evaluation, with one set of priorities, objectives and SMART goals.
This process involves:
initial and ongoing Board and leadership training;
a comprehensive review of data;
internal and external stakeholder input;
the development of a vision, mission, and values statement;
MSIP 6 audit for alignment to Standards and Indicators;
the setting of the priorities, objectives and SMART goals of the school district;
the communication of the direction of the school district;
the careful evaluation of outcomes;
the adjustments and revisions to the governance plan.
Our team’s brand of governance planning presents the Board with an extraordinary opportunity to establish the governing priorities and direction which is as unique as each individual school district.
Leadership Transition Management
The average tenure of a superintendent seems to grow shorter each year. Every April, as a result of elections, many school districts experience a change in their board composition. All of these changes have an impact on the Board/Superintendent relationship and thus, the district’s governance/leadership structure and stability. Because of the critical nature of this relationship, thoughtful targeted efforts must be made to avoid a disruption of the district’s long-term plan for the equitable education of children.
Our team assists school districts with the transition of professional and elected leaders through leadership position searches, training, interim educational services, and ongoing evaluation of the district’s plan for governing and leading. The process we use will ensure the lines of communication between the district’s board of education and top leaders are open and aligned so each entity's expectations are met and the lines of communication are wide open.
Culture & Climate Survey
Effective school districts have a keen sense of how their internal and external audiences are feeling about their work. Our team has established a very straight-forward, yet very effective means of gathering school climate and culture data from all stakeholders – students, staff, parents and patrons.
Once gathered this data is key to establishing and/or revising goals and implementation strategies for systematic and systemic improvement. This work also satisfies the MSIP 6 requirements.
